05.06.2024 1 & 2 Samuel

Scripture read this week: 1 Samuel 2 Samuel Notes on the reading 1 Samuel  - Jewish tradition holds that Samuel was the author of 1 & 2 Samuel, but this can't be the case as Samuel's death is recorded in 1 Samuel 25:1. Some propose Nathan or Gad to be the writer.  Samuel is born to Hannah who was barren until she gave a vow to God: [10] She was deeply distressed and prayed to the LORD and wept bitterly. [11] And she vowed a vow and said, “O LORD of hosts, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your servant and remember me and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a son, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and no razor shall touch his head.” (1 Samuel 1:10–11, ESV) Samuel is given over to the Eli as a Nazirite in the priesthood. Eli's two useless sons do evil in God's eyes, and Eli lazily tries to rebuke them, but they don't turn from their sin. Samuel is quickly gaining favor in both God and Eli's eyes. God aud

04.23.2024 1 & 2 Timothy, Esther

Scripture read this week: 1 Timothy 2 Timothy Esther Notes on the reading 1 Timothy - Timothy was a mentee of Paul and may have been his closest friend. Timothy was raised in the faith by his Grandmother (Lois) and mother (Eunice). Timothy is talked about quite a bit throughout Paul's writings, and Paul would often send Timothy to churches as his representative. Paul writes this letter to Timothy shortly after his first Roman imprisonment. Timothy is server as pastor at the church in Ephesus.  Paul opens up his letter by reminding Timothy to call out those that are preaching strange doctrine and causing division: [3] As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus so that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, [4] nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the stewardship from God that is by faith. [5] The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscienc

04.16.2024 Deuteronomy

Scripture read this week: Deuteronomy Notes on the reading Deuteronomy - The Hebrew title of this book is "These are the words". The book takes place at the end of Moses' life just outside of the Promised Land. This book documents Moses' last words to the Israelites. Israel has become a great nation that has defeated many powerful enemies thanks to the Lord God. The beginning of Deuteronomy has Moses reminding the Israelites of these great victories and of the hardship they faced when they did not Fear God, but feared others instead. He recaps the 40 years in the wilderness and the defeats of Sihon and of Og.  Moses and the older Israelites were prohibited by God from entering the promised land because they refused to enter Anakim territory even though God had promised them victory. They feared the the Anakim saying "The people are greater and taller than we". God, in his anger, swore that: [ 35] ‘Not one of these men of this evil generation shall see the

04.08.2024 1-3 John, 2 Peter

Scripture read this week: 1 John 2 John 3 John 2 Peter Notes on the reading 1 John  - This letter is not addressed to any specific church, and experts believe this was written towards the end of the first Century. All of John's writings seemed to have been written when he was near the end of his long life.  John does not do the grey. You're in or you're out. If you've come into a relationship with Christ, then you must be a new creation. We are fallen, we fail and if you don't think you've sinned, then you are not saved.  [5] This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. [6] If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. [7] But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. [8] If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is
